Sixth Annual Conifer Weekend

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010

If you live in the South, plan to make a trip to Piccadilly Farm this fall.  They are open Fridays and Saturdays, until October 30 from 10am-4pm.  Their annual Conifer weekend is scheduled for October 1 and 2.  Find out about great plants including conifers that thrive in the shade.  I bought one of my favorite plants there, Poet’s Laurel (Danae racemosa) an elegant broad leaf evergreen for shade.   You can also order Hellebores to be shipped.  25 4inch plants for $85.00 plus $15.00 for shipping.  (checks only)  This unique nursery does not have a website so you will just have to visit in person.    They are located at 1971 Whippoorwill Rd., Bishop, GA 30621 south of Athens, Georgia.  Turn off 53 at the Oconee Civic Center and High School on to Union Church Rd, then turn right on Whippoorwill.  Phone 706-769-6516.  Tell the owners  Sam and Carleen Jones I sent you.

Large Leaf Bamboo Fern

Last week along with two garden friends Rosemary and Anne, I visited the Georgia Perimeter College Botanical Garden and came away with a list of ferns I want to try in my own garden.  Under the guidance of George Sanko whose enthusiasm is contagious, they have amassed an impressive and diverse collection of ferns that includes both native and exotic types. And, the good news is that some of these will be available at their regular plants sales this fall on Wednesdays and Saturdays. They will also offer companion plants to grow with your ferns.  On this visit a number of ferns caught my attention including the Large Leaf Bamboo Fern, Coniogramme japonica ‘Variegata,’ Bamboo Fern, Coniogramme japonica, Dwarf Holly fern, Crytomium caryotideum, Thelypteris beddomei ‘Korean Traveler,’ which spreads by runners; Walking Maidenhair, Adiantum caudatum, Northern Maidenhair, Adiantum pedatum and Ostrich fern, Matteuccia struthiopteris. A striking combination of the Dixie Wood fern, Dryopteris x australis with the hardy Needle Palm, Rhaphidophyllum hystrix is perfect for adding drama in the shade garden.
